Fly the green flag for your favourite park

Residents across the borough have the chance to put their favourite local park on the map by nominating it for a prestigious Green Flag People’s Choice Award, alongside the very best green spaces across the entire country.

The competition is organised by the leading environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy alongside the Green Flag Award Scheme, which credits the best parks and green spaces in the UK each year.

A Green Flag flying is a sign that identifies the park as being beautifully maintained, with excellent facilities and the highest standards.

Whether you enjoy visiting a park or green space to play football, walk the dog, exercise or simply get away from the hustle and bustle, if you think your favourite deserves to be in the top 10 for the People’s Choice Awards, then cast your vote.

Ealing was awarded Green Flags for 21 of its parks and open spaces last month, further enhancing the borough’s reputation as one of the greenest and most beautiful boroughs in the capital.

This year, Katherine Buchan Meadow was also recognised with a Green Flag Community Award for the first time. This followed an ambitious project by residents to rejuvenate and reclaim a small area near St Mark’s Primary School in Old Hanwell into a beautiful, communal space for everyone to enjoy.

The project was supported by the council’s Transform Your Space initiative, a special fund that has been helping residents restore unloved corners and bring them back into community life.

Councillor Mik Sabiers, cabinet member for environment and highways said: “We were delighted to be awarded Green Flag status for 21 of the borough’s parks last month.

“Now local people can nominate their favourite for national recognition via the People’s Choice Award – I encourage everyone to get involved and help put the borough’s brilliant parks on the map, alongside the very best in the country.”

Paul Todd, Green Flag Award manager said: “This year 1,883 parks and green spaces met the tough standards demanded by our Green Flag Award judges but we want to know which parks the UK public love the most.

“The People’s Choice award is a chance to show how much your favourite park means to you. If it’s worth shouting about, make your voice heard and vote now.”

The vote opens on 1 September and closes on 30 September. The top 10 sites will be announced on 16 October.

To nominate your favourite park, visit the Green Flag Awards website, locate it on the winner’s map and click the voting button. Once you’ve registered your vote, you can encourage others to get involved too through social media using the hashtag #PeoplesChoice.
