Westside Radio DJ workshop for young carers through Brentford FC CST

Young carers given a radio DJ masterclass

A football club teamed up with a local radio station to show young carers from the borough how to DJ and to teach them interviewing skills.

Brentford FC’s Community Sports Trust worked with Westside Radio, based in Hanwell, to put together the workshop. It saw young people from Ealing who are part of the trust’s intervention projects learn how to operate broadcast equipment; learn how to play songs; learn basic presenting techniques; and learn how to prepare and conduct a radio interview.

They are all part of the trust’s Young Carers and Brighter Futures projects, which are commissioned by Ealing Council. The projects offer educational and support activities to young people performing a carer role in their homes – often for parents.

The radio workshop culminated in the young people interviewing Brentford FC players Matej Majka and Gustav Mogensen in an interview-style setting.

And, after Brentford’s huge 7-0 victory over Luton, the youngsters then put their skills to the test when they took part in the post-match press conference. Rose, 14, had the unique opportunity to ask Brentford’s head coach Thomas Frank what his favourite moment of the game was.

Rose, who cares for her mum, said: “I really enjoyed taking part in the workshop and then testing my skills at the press conference. I am proud to be the only female ‘journalist’ to ask a question.”

Wilzy, DJ and tutor at Westside Radio, said: “It was a great pleasure training young people from Brentford FC Community Sports Trust in radio presenting. They really enjoyed the experience of presenting a radio show alongside interviewing some of Brentford’s players. Hopefully we have discovered some future stars of sports broadcasting.”

Along with playing hip hop and R&B, Westside Radio delivers community content related to Ealing and surrounding boroughs and help to ‘up-skill’ young people with a range of educational workshops.
