Residents are invited to join the traditional Remembrance services taking place across the borough to commemorate the sacrifice of our armed forces, past and present.
Remembrance Sunday is on 9 November. You can attend a local service; with 3 key, traditional events being held on the morning in Southall, Greenford and Ealing.
The largest one is traditionally held in Ealing, where the mayor of Ealing, Councillor Anthony Kelly, will attend a parade and ceremony at Ealing War Memorial on Ealing Green, in front of Pitzhanger Manor, with a 2-minute silence at 11am. The King’s representative Deputy Lieutenant Richard Kornicki will be attending the service, as will council leader Peter Mason.
In Greenford, the local branch of the Royal British Legion will march to Greenford War Memorial from its headquarters in Oldfield Lane South for a public service at 11am.
At 10:45am at the Southall War Memorial, The Green, Southall, people will gather for the Remembrance Service which will include a 2-minute silence at 11am. Attendees are then invited to St John’s Church in Church Avenue for a short ceremony and refreshments.
Councillor Mason, writing in his latest Leader’s Notes, said: “Remembrance Sunday reminds us of the values that bind us together: duty, service, and solidarity. It is about more than wreaths and ceremonies; it is about ensuring that the lessons of history are never forgotten. It is also about the real people that served and their stories: almost every family in the borough will have relatives that served in the world wars.”
Armistice Day
Armistice Day marks the end of the First World War in 1918 and at 11am there is traditionally a 2-minute silence – at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month – to remember those who died. This will be on Tuesday 11 November.
Remembrance Sunday is held on the nearest Sunday to Armistice Day.
Standing with our veterans
Ealing Council upholds its commitment to supporting veterans and those transitioning out of the armed forces. Through its Armed Forces Covenant, the council offers guidance and support across key areas including housing, employment, welfare, education, and healthcare.
As a forces-friendly employer, the council also provides at least 5 extra days of paid leave annually for reservists to complete their training.
