Pitzhanger Manor and Gallery officially open

Pitzhanger Manor and Gallery has reopened its doors to the public, marking the successful completion of a £12 million conservation and restoration project led by Ealing Council.

TV presenter Angellica Bell officially cut the ribbon to open Pitzhanger this morning (Saturday 16 March) alongside local children who had designed winning posters celebrating the famous building’s return.

Arguably the finest heritage gem in Ealing, the building has been restored to all its Regency splendour thanks to the three-year project undertaken by the council, in partnership with the Pitzhanger Manor and Gallery Trust (PMGT).

What’s more, the Gallery’s inaugural exhibition sees Turner Prize-winning artist Anish Kapoor presenting a series of sculptures, some previously unseen in Britain.

Pitzhanger Manor itself is the Grade I listed home of visionary British architect Sir John Soane and the restoration has been completed with his original vision for the building in mind.

The most significant elements of Soane’s original plans have been restored, including the conservatory, which was originally demolished in 1901, and its iconic central roof light.

A beautiful colonnade connecting the Manor and Gallery buildings have been recreated and Soane’s original intricate paint schemes from as far back as the early 1800s have also been meticulously reinstated throughout.

Julian Bell, Leader of Ealing Council said: “Pitzhanger Manor is the crown jewel of Ealing’s heritage and I am delighted to see it open to the public. I encourage local people to plan a visit and enjoy an unbeatable day out right on their doorstep.

“We have worked alongside the Pitzhanger Manor and Gallery Trust to secure necessary funding and ensure that the project has been completed and that the building is now fulfilling its potential.”

Clare Gough, Director of Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery Trust said: “We are delighted to reveal for the first time in over 150 years Pitzhanger as designed by Soane, bringing this building back to life to engage and inspire visitors.

“Anish Kapoor’s exhibition will enable the public to look at Soane and his influence in a new light. We look forward to establishing Pitzhanger as an inspiring destination for heritage, culture and art.”
