Local volunteers recognised for their marathon effort

The hundreds of people who gave up their time to ensure the 2017 Ealing Half Marathon ran smoothly and successfully have been recognised with a prestigious award.

The volunteers at Ealing Half Marathon CIC won the Sports category of the Team London Awards and were celebrated for outstanding contribution to volunteering in sports at the event, which took place on 6 November at London’s City Hall.

The award is a well-earned accolade for both the volunteer team, and the Half Marathon itself, which is well-known for its fantastic atmosphere and outstanding support from the local community.

The annual Team London Awards ceremony is run by the Mayor of London and celebrates the people, teams and volunteers who make outstanding contributions to their communities in the capital.

Cllr Bassam Mahfouz, cabinet member for transport environment and leisure, said: “Congratulations to the Ealing Half Marathon CIC and its volunteers, who worked hard to make this year’s event a real success and something the whole borough can be proud of.

“The Ealing Half Marathon CIC plays a really important role at a local level, investing all money raised by the race straight back into projects within the community. It’s a great achievement to be recognised at the Team London Awards and certainly well deserved.

“There’s a fantastic sense of community involved with this event and it’s so inspiring to see the number of people who have discovered running and become fitter and healthier as a direct result of the amazing work the Ealing Half team do.

“It is one of many opportunities here in Ealing for local people to get involved in sports in order to get moving and improve their health and fitness.”

Race Director Sandra Courtney added: “We are absolutely thrilled for our hardworking volunteers to win recognition of what they do on Ealing Half Marathon day.

“We get volunteers travelling from all over to come and help and the hundreds of people coming together each September to put on the Ealing Half is what makes the event so special for the runners and for West London.

“Our volunteers are so supportive and we really want to thank them for all they do. Well done to each and every one of them that has helped earn this over the years.”
