Council Leader Peter Mason and cabinet member for climate action, Paul Driscoll, stood leaning against a green bike hangar

Chain reaction: hooray for the 150th bike hangar

The 150th bike hangar has been installed in the borough, giving cyclists a secure space to store their bikes.

The hangar in Avenue Road was one of 9 installed in a week and means that Ealing Council has hit its target of providing 150 hangars in the borough by 2026. It fulfils a promise made in 2022.

Council leader Peter Mason and Councillor Paul Driscoll, the council’s cabinet member for climate action, visited one of the new hangars in Kenilworth Road, Ealing.

Others were installed earlier this month in Birkbeck Road, Petersfield Road, Saville Road, Highlands Avenue, Southfield Road and Brookfield Road in Acton and Ivy Crescent in Chiswick. Installations have taken place across the borough this year, meaning residents in every town have access to safe cycle storage.

Each bike hangar has 6 parking spaces, and it costs only 70p per month, or £8.40 per year, to park there.

More spaces, less cost

Councillor Mason said: “Having a safe and affordable place to park your bike is vital to getting people cycling. That’s why we promised to install 150 hangars with 900 spaces by 2026 and slashed the cost of using them, to make them the cheapest in London. It’s been really popular with cyclists and is part of our commitment to support active travel and the environment by making it easier to cycle, walk or wheel.”

Councillor Driscoll said: “All of the bike hangars are in locations suggested by the community who told us where they wanted storage for their bikes. It’s a big step in encouraging people to cycle and making our air cleaner.”
