Hanwell’s Chloe Kelly, who was offered the Freedom of the Borough after her goal won England Euro 2022, has done it again.
On Sunday (27 July), she scored the winning penalty in the Euro 2025 final against Spain to help England keep their hands on the trophy for another 4 years.
A role model and inspiration
Chloe grew up in the borough and went to Elthorne Park High School in Hanwell. I’m sure everyone at the school was cheering her on.
She has already become an incredible role model and inspiration for local children wanting to follow in her footballing footsteps or simply follow their dreams.
We, at the council, are all very proud of what she’s achieved. And we look forward to formalising her Freedom of the Borough honour in the months ahead.
We are also currently working on a public art plan for the borough, which goes out to consultation later this year, and we are keen that this plan includes the celebration of local heroes, like Chloe, and identifies spaces in our towns for these.
A place to play
Girls’ and women’s football is growing bigger and bigger with every year and it’s something we at the council want to do all we can to support. Like other sports, it is so important to have places within easy reach to play.
That is why we have been working so hard on returning sports facilities to the Warren Farm site, alongside a nature reserve.
With it being on the borders of Southall and Hanwell, having new pitches (and more) next to Warren Farm could nurture the next Chloe Kelly. Or the next Bukayo Saka, the Greenford-raised football star who we also gave Freedom of the Borough to, in 2022.
This summer, there are lots of sports activities for kids, across the borough, and I hope children (and adults) will be inspired by the Lionesses’ exciting victory to slip their boots or trainers on their feet and get out there and play.
Well done Chloe, and the whole England team.
