Stress Awareness Month – help with how to cope

With the outbreak and spread of the coronavirus, this is a particularly stressful time for people. So, to mark National Stress Awareness month, Ealing Council is reminding people of some ways and methods to look after themselves and try to reduce stress.

Millions of people across the country are experiencing high levels of stress and it is damaging our health. Stress is one of the great public health challenges of our time, but it is not always taken as seriously as physical health concerns. Stress is a significant factor in mental health problems, including anxiety and depression.

Ealing News Extra has recently looked at some ways to stay healthy and happy during the lockdown, and also at ways to exercise at home. Exercise is also well-known to give mental health a boost. But we would love to hear from our residents too about their top tips. Please tweet us with your tips to reduce stress.

You can also get inspiration for all kinds of things to do at home and occupy your time, with our stuck at home but not stuck for ideas story.

Councillor Binda Rai, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for health and adults’ services, said: “Many residents will understandably be feeling more stressed and under pressure at the moment but there are plenty of means and ways to combat that.

“I find that focusing on doing things I don’t normally get time to do, helps me depending on how ambitious I feel on the day. For example walking and running (beginners level), cooking, potting a few plants and learning a new skill that I’ve always wanted to learn. For some people it can often take a number of attempts at trying different things to find a solution that’s right for you, stress can be a very personal thing to overcome and it’s important to remember that we all deal with it differently.”

Helpline for support

Ealing Council has set up a dedicated helpline on 020 8825 7170 for vulnerable residents who are self-isolating and need support. You can call between 9am-5pm Monday-Friday or 10am-4pm Saturday and Sunday.
