Celebrating London Living Wage employers

Almost 16,000 workers in the borough are benefitting from being paid at least the London Living Wage.

The boost to pay packets was just one of the benefits highlighted at a special awards ceremony hosted by Ealing Council, which recognised the achievements of London Living Wage employers in the borough – employers who pay an hourly rate of at least £14.80 which is calculated based on the real cost of living.

The second ever annual London Living Wage in Ealing Awards, held at the University of West London earlier this month, celebrated accredited employers who have made exceptional contributions to their employees, sectors, and communities.

The event was organised by Ealing Council, and its London Living Wage action group, with support from University of West London Students’ Union, West London Business, and Ealing Citizens.

Award-winning businesses

There are now more than 150 accredited Living Wage employers and almost 1,000 workers in the borough have received a pay rise as a direct result of their employer becoming accredited.

Awards were presented for 5 categories, and the winners were:

The winners each received a trophy and voucher for making outstanding contributions in the borough.

And well done to those who were highly commended: Arts CIC for the creative sector category, AAA Satellites & Aerials for the construction sector category, and Greener Ealing, Mahaba Café, City Harvest, Centre for Armenian Information and Advice, and University of West London Students’ Union for the charity or not-for-profit category.

‘Stand out as leaders’

Out of the accredited Living Wage employers with a local presence, 110 are registered in the borough. This places Ealing among the top 10 London boroughs for Living Wage accreditations and makes it the highest‑ranked borough in west London. It’s a big leap forward from 2022, when the borough ranked 17th with only 33 accredited employers. It is also the first Living Wage Place in west London – one of just 17 in the UK.

Peter George, the council’s strategic director of economy and sustainability, said: “In recent years, the number of Ealing-based accredited employers has more than tripled, with more on the way. As well as demonstrating their social responsibility and receiving recognition for this, these employers are benefiting from our generous incentive scheme, and we urge more local employers to join.

“Congratulations to all the winners. Our borough is home to some fantastic businesses and organisations who are committed to their staff. These award winners stand out as leaders in their fields, show real dedication to supporting their workers, and I am very pleased that almost 1,000 local people in the borough are earning a higher salary as a direct result of our campaign. Paying the London Living Wage means fair pay, good jobs, and stronger careers.”
