Mayor is symbol of pride and identity

Last week, I attended our annual council and mayor making ceremony. The annual council meeting marks the start of the council year where we choose a new mayor for the year. I was delighted to support Councillor Anthony Kelly be elected mayor.

He is a proud community champion and I’m sure he will be an excellent mayor. We also thanked the outgoing mayor, Councillor Yvonne Johnson, for her year of service.

Last Tuesday’s event really symbolised what is great about our borough. The mayor is a symbol of pride and identity supported by all parties on the council to raise funds for local charities, represent the borough and participate in community events.

As the leader, I often attend events with the mayor and every time it is great to see how people connect with our traditions as a borough. The role represents all of our communities and acts as a focal point for the pride we have in all our 7 towns. We know from our residents’ survey that people love living in our borough and are proud to call it home. Having a person to represent that pride is a valuable thing.

No doubt you will see Councillor Kelly at events around the borough over the coming year. With the summer coming up there are no end of exciting community events that he will be involved in, and I urge everyone to attend and get involved.

In the autumn edition of Around Ealing magazine, there will be an article about Councillor Kelly and how he has been finding the new role he has taken on now, as the ‘first citizen’ of the borough.
