Tennis sessions for children are available at Gunnersbury Park

Game, set and match at new Gunnersbury Park tennis courts

Fancy taking up tennis? Or not played for ages and itching to give it another go? Gunnersbury Park is offering free tennis tasters from Monday (20 August).

Using the park’s new tennis courts, there will be opportunities for onsite coaching, holiday camps and mini tennis courses as well as free community outreach programmes within local schools to encourage children, who might not otherwise consider it, to try tennis for the first time.

Looking for school holiday activities? Funded by the John Lyon Foundation, there will be a free children’s summer camp for ages five to nine. They will run between 9am – 12noon, from Monday, 20 August until Friday, 24 August. And, on Wednesday, 22 August, there will also be free one-hour tennis tasters for five–12 year-olds between 1–4pm.

You can also get the whole family together for the free Great British Tennis Weekend from 10am until 3pm on Saturday, 1 September. From this date, courts can be booked at a cost of just £8 per hour. Mini tennis courses and adult coaching classes will also be available.

‘A number of free and low-cost sessions’

The tennis courts will be just one part of a new sports hub being built as part of the Gunnersbury Park regeneration project organised by Ealing and Hounslow councils, which jointly own the site.

Max Goodchild is community sports manager for GLL, which will be managing the courts on the councils’ behalf. He said: “The new courts will be a huge asset to the local community, offering everyone, regardless of age or ability, the chance to enjoy tennis. We’re delighted to be able to offer a number of free and low-cost sessions and look forward to introducing this hugely enjoyable sport to those who perhaps have never considered it before.”

Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for finance and leisure, said: “It’s fantastic to see the new tennis courts at Gunnersbury Park open for local people of all ages to benefit from. Tennis will be just one of a huge range of sports open to residents at Gunnersbury Park once the multi-million-pound sports hub is completed next spring”.
