Actonians, Sports Club of the Year 2018

One of the oldest clubs…and now the ‘best’

One of the borough’s oldest and best-loved sporting institutions is celebrating after winning the title of Sports Club of the Year at the recent Ealing Sports Awards ceremony.

Actonians was founded as a cricket club in 1925 by pupils of the former Acton grammar school. The club has moved on a lot since then and members can now enjoy cricket, football, rugby, tennis, netball, badminton, table tennis, squash and hockey.

Carlene Bender, chair of the club’s women’s cricket committee, said: “Many people in the borough will have heard of us, but may not know about all the different sports we offer and that we also work with schools to encourage young people to get involved in sport.

“We’re absolutely delighted to have won this award, particularly when we were competing against other really well established and much respected clubs.

“We have so many volunteers who give up their time to coach teams and organise the club, it’s fantastic for them to have this recognition.”

Ealing Sports Awards is sponsored by Everyone Active. The inaugural awards were held in 2017 to recognise the achievements of the hundreds of volunteers who give up their time to support grassroots sports in the borough and celebrate the achievements of the borough’s sports people.

The competition was fierce this year, with more than 150 sports people and clubs nominated. The winners were presented with their awards by Sky Sports presenter Marcus Buckland. You can view a gallery of the winners receiving their awards and read a bit more about the ceremony.

Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, cabinet member for finance and leisure, said: “It was such a terrific pleasure to judge the Ealing Sports Awards. The standard of nominations was again so high this year. It fills me with incredible pride to see so many fantastic sports clubs and individuals across the borough.”
