Songwriters encouraged by Alice Gross awards

Young songwriters have the opportunity to spend a day at British Grove Studios as part of the annual songwriting awards to honour a former student of Brentside Academy High.

Alice Gross, a promising musician had dreams of becoming a well-known artist tragically lost her life in 2014 and just last year had songwriting awards established in her name.

The inaugural winner of the awards was Raquel Joseph from Brentside High School (full story here). Raquel got the chance to be with musical experts at the studios to create a professional recording of her track, Crestfallen.

Crestfallen was written by Raquel and touches on the issue of depression and what it is like for a girl suffering from mental health. Watch the full video and audio recording of the song above.

The awards are now in their second year with applications to take part in the 2019 Alice Gross Memorial Song Writing Awards closing 1 December.

“I am really pleased Ealing Music Service are able to offer this award for a 2nd year to young song writers in the borough in Alice’s memory. Alice was a songwriter and musician herself and this memorial award, and prize of a day in a recording studio, could be the stepping stone for a career in songwriting and a future in music,” said Samantha Spence, assistant head of service at Ealing Music Service.

Councillor Yvonne Johnson, cabinet member for schools and children’s services, said: “Ealing has a strong music culture and the talent amongst our schools is where it begins. The Alice Gross awards gives so much promise to young musicians to be able to chase their dreams.”

If you are a promising musician at a school in the London Borough of Ealing and would like to apply, visit www.ealingmusicservice.com. Applications close Saturday, 1 December 2018.
