North Greenford Bowls Club

Roll up and be bowled over by a new sport

Two of the borough’s lawn bowls clubs are welcoming new members and giving people the chance to try their hand at the sport. And there is no need to register- anyone can roll up and have a go.

North Greenford Bowls Club and Islip Manor Bowls group are both looking for new players to come along to drop-in session and have a go.

Bowls can be played individually, in pairs or small teams. The aim of the game is simple, to get your bowl as close to a small ball, known as the jack, as possible. But the bowls do not travel in straight lines, so there is a lot of skill involved.
Both clubs will lend bowls to new players, so all that is needed is flat shoes that can be worn on the bowling green.

Secretary at the North Greenford club, Chris Jones, said “Bowls is such a fun sport and a great social activity. There is a lot more to it than you would think and it can become quite tactical and competitive. It’s suitable for all ages and although it’s a highly skilled sport, you don’t need to be athletic so it’s a good way to get out and get some exercise and stay active as you get older.

“We’re a really friendly, welcoming club and we’d love more people to come along and have a go. We are always pleased to see new people and we will spend time explaining the rules and showing them what to do.”

Just roll up

No experience is necessary. Anyone can just drop in and have a go.

North Greenford Bowls Club, based at Horsenden Lane North, opposite the Ballot Box pub, has a roll-up, or practice day, every Tuesday from 2pm to 8pm during the summer season which runs until the end of September. Competitions are played daily at 2pm or 6pm and people are welcome to come along and watch.

Islip Manor Bowls group, based at Islip Manor Park, Eastcote Lane, has roll-up practices 10am to midday on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays during the summer season, which ends in the middle of October.
