Leading the charge for electric vehicles

Ealing Council is stepping up its commitment to a greener future by leading on a project to introduce more electric vehicle (EV) charging points across west London.

With 1,081 charge points already in place, the borough is one of the most EV-ready boroughs in the capital. But, with demand growing fast, the council is aiming to more than double that number to around 2,500 by 2030 to make it even easier for residents to charge EVs.

Joined forces

To help fund this ambitious target, the council has joined forces with 5 neighbouring boroughs – Brent, Hammersmith & Fulham, Haringey, Harrow, and Hillingdon. Together, they successfully secured £7.5 million from the government’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) fund.

Ealing Council took over the reins from Hammersmith & Fulham Council to lead the project. Now, the council is preparing to find a supplier to install and manage the new charge points.

Most of the new charge points will be standard speed (3.7 to 8 kW), ideal for overnight charging. These will be installed on existing lampposts where possible, helping to reduce street clutter and support the council’s pledge to make walking and cycling easier and safer for residents.

‘A healthier, more sustainable place to live’

Council Leader, Peter Mason, said: “Supporting the take up of electric vehicles is a vital part of our work to cut emissions, improve air quality and make the borough a healthier, more sustainable place to live.”

“By expanding our EV charging network and working collaboratively with neighbouring boroughs, we’re making green travel a more realistic option for residents.”

Councillor Paul Driscoll, the council’s cabinet member for climate action, added: “We’re proud to be leading this partnership and helping to deliver the infrastructure needed to support the switch to electric vehicles.

“We know that switching to electric vehicles is a big step for many residents, and access to reliable charging is key.”

What are the benefits of using electric vehicles?

  • zero emission vehicles that meet the criteria are eligible for a 100% discount on the Congestion Charge until 24 December 2025
  • exempt from the Ultra Low Emission schemes
  • helps to clean up Ealing’s air
  • lower cost parking permit in Ealing borough
  • reduced company car tax
  • quieter than traditional vehicles
