Get ready for the Ealing Summer Reading Challenge

The Ealing Summer Reading Challenge is once again coming to libraries across the borough. The free, annual celebration is the perfect opportunity for local children to improve their reading skills and confidence, and enjoy the brilliance of books over summer holidays.

Libraries across the borough are hosting a full range of free fun craft activities to help local children aged four to 11 take on the Summer Reading Challenge of completing six or more books over the holiday period. Along the way children can collect stickers to solve the mystery, (some of them even smell) in the library and when they complete they will receive a medal, certificate and a free swim voucher.

This year’s theme is Animal Agents, with a number of brilliant illustrations of mystery-solving creatures provided by the popular children’s writer and illustrator, Tony Ross.

Councillor Ranjit Dheer, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for safety, culture and community services said: “The council is once again backing The Summer Reading Challenge here in Ealing. It’s a fantastic way to encourage children to keep reading over the summer holidays, helping them improve literacy skills and develop enthusiasm for books.

“I encourage anyone looking for ways to keep children busy during the summer holidays to visit their local library, sign-up to the challenge, and enjoy what their local library has to offer.”

Places for events and activities are limited and available on a first come, first served basis. If booking is required, please contact the library where the event is to be held. Participating children need to be a member of a library in the borough in order to take part.

The Summer Reading Challenge starts this Saturday (15 July) and runs until 16 September.
