Step up for some free or low-cost summer fun

Why not fill your calendars this summer with a range of free and low-cost fun and activities that are due to happen across the borough?

Whether you’re looking for ways to spend your evenings and weekends, or you’re looking for something to entertain the family, this guide has something for everyone.

Summer pop-ups

A series of summer pop-up events are coming to Hanwell Community Centre, in Westcott Crescent. From midday- 4pm on selected dates from Saturday 28 June you can browse the wellbeing stalls, artisan and beauty products or admire handmade jewellery. You can also get stuck into the arts and crafts or join in the face painting activities with your little ones. Visit the Ealing Culture website for more information.

Woodland wellbeing

Young people aged 16-25, with additional needs, are being encouraged to enjoy fun woodland wellbeing sessions in Hanwell. The programme is free for borough residents.

The sessions are run by a fully qualified forest school leader and are designed to allow young people the opportunity to enjoy the natural world. Learn to cook on a campfire, enjoy natural craft making and much more. Visit the Young Ealing Foundation website for more information.

Sample the joys of fishing at one of the family taster sessions being offered at Northala Fields in Northolt, by the charity Get Hooked on Fishing (GHOF).

You will be provided with all the equipment, bait, permissions and licenses and someone to assist you with your first catch. The 25-minute sessions cost £3 per person.

They Sunday sessions will be held between 11am-2:30pm on:

  • 6 and 27 July
  • 10 and 24 August
  • 21 September 

The charity also run 1-hour sessions designed to help people learn how to fish and grow in confidence and skill. Cost: £15.

Fun and games

ActOne in Acton is not only the borough’s only independent not-for-profit community cinema. It also hosts free board game evenings and monthly Open Mic nights, as well as other low-cost activities. Go to the ActOne website for more information.

Move & Make

Join Our Moving Stories, a non-profit community interest company, for its Move & Make fun activity sessions. Designed for families with children aged 0-5, the next sessions will be held between 9:30am-11:30am on 25 June and 2 July at Open Havelock, on the Havelock estate in Southall. The sessions are free but require booking through Eventbrite.

Feeling creative?

Between 4-8 August, children aged 7 to 11 can take part in a 5-day Creative Summer Holiday Club at Pitzhanger Manor & Gallery (PMG) in Ealing. You can sign up for one or more days of inspiring hands-on activities, running daily from 10am to 3pm. Concessions are available for job seekers and people on income support.

Young adults and teens

Get involved in a range of programmes and activities at one of the council-run youth centres. They offer sports, cooking, music studios, fitness suites, DJ-ing, competitions, different types of arts as well as use of computers. Or you can just go along, relax and chill with your friends. Culture at your fingertips

Go to the Ealing Culture website and discover news and information about arts and culture events happening across the borough. You can add your own group’s event listings too.

And, finally…

You could be in with a chance to win cinema tickets by entering the latest Seasons of Ealing photo competition, and you could even see your entry published in the next edition of Around Ealing magazine, in print and online.
