Bright ideas for energy saving in Ealing

A major upgrade of Ealing’s street lights was recently completed which will see energy saving technology helping the council deliver a greener and more cost-effective service.

The council has worked in partnership with its current lighting contractor, SSE Enterprise, and lighting technology company Mayflower to transition the Borough’s 20,000 standard street lamps to environmentally friendly LED’s. This has led to a 50% reduction in the costs of street lighting across the borough through greater energy efficiency.

The council began work with Mayflower in 2015 to replace existing sodium lights with state of the art LED lanterns, with the aim of reducing energy and maintenance costs. Central to the plans to increasing efficiency is Mayflower’s CMS (Central Management System) which is now in use as part of the upgrades.

The CMS allows street lighting across the borough to be monitored and operated centrally. Harnessing this smart technology allows the council greater control and flexibility when managing the borough’s street lighting. It also creates further savings, as monitoring can be done remotely, reducing the amount of call-outs to individual street lamps.

Last month, Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, cabinet member for transport leisure and environment joined a team servicing street lights to see how this new approach is being put into action.

Councillor Mahfouz said: “When it comes to lighting the way for energy saving, Ealing is streets ahead. We upgraded our street-lighting technology with the aim of significantly cutting energy output and carbon emissions. I am pleased that we have now halved the cost of street lighting as well.

“The council is benefiting from a more cost-effective, greener service and we are using Mayflower’s smart technology to monitor and maintain street-lighting centrally, which reduces the cost even further by cutting the amount of call-outs to individual lamps.

“We remain committed to further improving energy efficiency to ensure the best value for council tax payers and to see services run in a sustainable and environmentally-friendly way.”

MD of Mayflower, Patrick Mitchell commented; “The team at Mayflower are delighted to have assisted Ealing Council achieve significant savings and increased efficiency via flexible control and management of the lighting assets. We continue to work with Ealing Council exploring new and innovative applications that will benefit its stakeholders in the future.”
