Learning skills at work

Local businesses and employers are reaping the rewards of their staff learning new skills by attending vocational courses in Ealing.

In a partnership between Ealing Council’s adult learning service and local companies, employees are given opportunities to learn skills for their work environment but also for everyday life.

The adult learning courses offer everything from social media skills, to English language classes; andfrom computer technology, to a sign language course; and so much more.

‘I passed and am on the next level’

Liudvika gained a promotion after completing a course

At Délifrance in Southall, an international company that sells pastries and savoury products across the country, staff are able to take advantage of courses focusing on ICT and the English language. The courses have been attended by 17 number of employees and it has resulted in a number of success stories. These successes include Liudvika Tursina. She started at Délifrance in its bakery and, since completing an adult learning course, has been promoted to a machine operator. She said: “I did the English as a foreign language course, which I passed and now am on the next level. It helped me to improve my English and understand different tasks.

“I encourage people to study English, not just for work, but also to integrate the English way of living life better.”

The council’s partnership with Délifrance has been such a success that the adult learning course is being offered to employees of Délifrance in other parts of the country.

Councillor Jasbir Anand, the council’s cabinet member for employment and skills, said: “Liudvika’s story proves the benefits of continuing to learn throughout your adult life. Whether it is to improve your job prospects, or ‘up-skill’ for your current job, gaining a qualification can help strengthen your CV and help you get ahead. Indeed, the benefits of adult learning for businesses are there for all to see by improving the effectiveness of the work force and boosting the chances of promoting from within. So I encourage businesses and individuals to go to the Ealing Work West website to find out more.”

There is information available to residents and employers on theWork West website.
