Exploring our place in the world

The world famous Tate Modern played host to some incredibly talented young artists from Ealing.

Young people from Bollo Brook Youth Centre, in Acton, put on an art exhibition exploring how we perceive our own and other people’s place in the world – looking into how different experiences influence this perception.

It was presented to hundreds of visitors at a session of the Uniqlo Tate Lates.

The artwork included self-portraits of the young artists themselves, with words attached on how they and other people perceive them. Those who attended the exhibition were also put into groups to discuss the subject.

Councillor Yvonne Johnson, the council’s deputy leader and cabinet member for schools and children’s services, said: “I am always in awe of the talent that our young people in Ealing have.

“I am so proud of them for putting on such an amazing exhibition at a world-renowned venue.

“This is a huge example of the great impact that youth centres can have. In a period of uncertainty and austerity, it is so important. This proves that funding youth centres, is well worth the money and brings the best out of people.”

Some of the teenagers that use the youth centre were interviewed about the exhibition by the BBC, which can be listened to on the YouTube video.

Bollo Brook Youth Centre is a place for young people to hang out with friends and take part in: Music production, arts and crafts, sports, cooking and gardening, as well as getting support and advice. Recent schemes have seen them being interviewed by the UN rapporteur and an intiative where they remade old bikes donated by the police which they could then keep.

At Bollo Brook residents learn new skills, make new friends and have fun. To find out more go to the Bollo Brook website.
