Apprenticeships week: Businesses benefit too

Between September and December last year, collectively, local businesses pledged to create 159 new apprenticeship vacancies during the annual 100-in-100 campaign, an initiative aimed at creating job opportunities for young people by giving them access to good quality employment and related training.

Just three months after the end of the council’s 100-in-100 campaign, 65 young people have already taken applied, secured and started an apprenticeship with a local employer.

Businesses report a range of benefits to taking on apprentices, with 80% of such companies recording an increase in employee retention.

The range of apprenticeships available is impressive, with positions in a variety of industries such as hospitality, horticulture, hair dressing, mechanical, education, retail and real estate, just to name a few.

Recent network apprentice Mikey Barnes (pictured)  has now got a full time job as a chef after successfully completing an apprenticeship with the Clocktower Cafe in Hanwell.

“It is fantastic that so many local employers are getting involved in creating apprenticeship vacancies, they clearly see this as a great way to recruit and train talented people to work in their business,” said head of employment and skills at Ealing Council, Simon Brooke.

This week (14-18 March) is National Apprenticeships Week and the council is looking to take on another group of apprentices to work with its varied and diverse services as part of its apprenticeships scheme.
You must be aged between 16 and 23 – and you can apply from 1 April. There is plenty more information available on how to go about this on the council’s website.

Businesses can still sign up to recruit an apprentice, and the council’s apprenticeship team will help you to get set up and support you along the way, free of charge.
