Above and beyond the bookshelves

spotlight on unleashing creativity

The borough’s libraries are not just places to read and study, but important community hubs where people come together, connect, and feel supported.

While book lending remains at the heart of library services, they have evolved into much more. From digital skills sessions and children’s story times to wellbeing activities and homework workshops, libraries are now home to a host of groups and clubs.

What makes them even more special is that several of the borough’s libraries are run by the community themselves – reflecting the commitment of volunteers who play a key role in helping these spaces thrive.

Celebrating 120 years

Hanwell Library, in Cherington Road, is one of 5 community libraries in the borough. It has been serving the community for 120 years and has been managed by local volunteers since 2019.

Charlie has been a volunteer at the library for the past few years, and can usually be found there on a Friday afternoon. He often supports residents with job applications on the library computers and says there’s a lot of variety in his role.

“It’s the interaction with people that I enjoy the most,” he said. “I wouldn’t have that if I was sitting at home.”

Susan has also been volunteering at the library for about 5 years. “We see lots of children and families here, particularly in the winter months. We have plenty of regular visitors too,” she said.

‘I come here most days’

One of those regulars is Evie, a local primary school pupil. She told us that she thinks the staff are amazing and how they create a welcoming atmosphere.

She said: “I come here to do some homework, borrow a book or draw. All the kids smile here and it’s nice of the staff to put our artwork up on the wall.”

Libraries are no longer just places to borrow books – they’re places to belong.

Councillor Blerina Hashani, the council’s cabinet member for thriving communities, said: “Libraries are the heart of our communities, and volunteering in one is a wonderful way to give back, gain skills and make friendships along the way.”
