Ealing open for business

Ealing is open for business

Since Monday (15 June), non-essential shops have been allowed to open again. This means that clothing, homeware and mobile phone stores are among the businesses that are resuming trade on Ealing’s high streets.

Retailers will need to take extra steps to ensure that they maintain the safety of their staff and customers. This may include limiting the number of customers allowed inside at one time, placing protective coverings on large items that may be touched by passing shoppers and frequently checking and cleaning objects and surfaces. They may also be using one-way systems, separate entrances and exits, or ask customers to wear face coverings or use hand gel to reduce the spread of the coronavirus

Business support

Ealing Council has been working closely with these businesses to ensure that they are able to open their doors again to customers. In addition to providing important health and safety guidance, the council has been widening public footways, reviewing and resolving queuing and installing signage on the high street. The council will also be checking businesses for compliance with the government’s requirements

“Our local retailers are working hard to put measures in place so that we can all shop safely,” said councillor Jasbir Anand, the council’s cabinet member for business and community services.

“They have been hit hard by the lockdown measures, so if you need to shop please shop locally and support your local high street.

“But please do your bit to stay alert and keep your distance. It is vital for residents to take extra care to ensure proper hygiene and cleanliness to contain the spread of coronavirus.

“If we all remain vigilant and respect the guidelines, we may be able to enjoy further easing of restrictions.”

When visiting the shops residents are reminded to walk or cycle where possible and avoid public transport. In some parts of the borough the council is using road space to allow for people to keep their distance.

Businesses that offer personal services, such as hairdressers and nail bars, will remain closed, in line with current government guidelines, until at least 4 July. This also applies to the hospitality industry, meaning that pubs, cafes and restaurants are still restricted to takeaway or delivery services only.
