A time to pause and remember

Residents are invited to join Remembrance services taking place across the borough to honour the sacrifice of members of the armed forces, past and present.

This year, Remembrance Sunday falls on 8 November. Residents can attend local services across the borough, with the 3 main traditional events taking place once again in Southall, Greenford and Ealing.

The largest service is traditionally held in Ealing, where the mayor of Ealing, Councillor Faduma Mohamed, will attend a parade and ceremony at Ealing War Memorial on Ealing Green, in front of Pitzhanger Manor. A 2-minute silence will be observed at 11am. The King’s representative, Deputy Lieutenant Richard Kornicki, will also attend, alongside council leader Peter Mason.

In Greenford, the local branch of the Royal British Legion will march to Greenford War Memorial from its headquarters in Oldfield Lane South for a public service at 11am.

At 10.45am at Southall War Memorial, The Green, Southall, people will gather for a remembrance service which will include a 2-minute silence at 11am. Attendees will then be invited to St John’s Church, in Church Avenue, for a short ceremony and refreshments.

Councillor Mason said: “Across the borough, people will come together on Remembrance Sunday to honour those who served and sacrificed their lives in conflicts past and present. As we pause to reflect, we remember ,not only the courage of those who fought, but also the families and communities whose lives were changed forever. It is an opportunity to give thanks, pay our respects and ensure that their service is never forgotten.”

Armistice Day

Armistice Day marks the end of the First World War in 1918. At 11am on Wednesday 11 November, people across the country will observe a 2-minute silence at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month to remember those who lost their lives in conflict.

Remembrance Sunday is held on the Sunday nearest to Armistice Day.

Supporting the armed forces community

Ealing Council continues to support serving personnel, veterans and military families through its Armed Forces Covenant. Advice and support are available across areas including housing, employment, welfare, education and healthcare.

As a forces-friendly employer, the council also provides at least 5 extra days of paid leave each year for reservists to complete their training.
