New ‘Tidy Teams’ introduced by Ealing Council this year have already carried out more than 1,300 street cleaning tasks.
Since May, the Tidy Teams have been springing into action to respond to reports from residents, or the council, and to carry out targeted clean-up jobs. This includes anything from clearing litter or wet leaves, to washing pavements or bins.
Working alongside the council’s regular street cleansing service, which follows a planned schedule, the new teams provide support when issues arise with something such as fly-tipping, or to carry out extra cleaning where it is needed.
Responding to residents’ concerns
Reports from residents help the council know where cleaning is needed. Of the 1,313 reported issues completed by the teams so far, 894 were sorted out within 7 days and the remaining 419 were done within 14 days.
By responding quickly to reports and carrying out extra cleaning, the teams are helping to improve the appearance of towns across the borough. In fact, they have cleaned at 71 different locations.
In the 4 months since they got started, the Tidy Teams have completed:
- 983 litter-clearing jobs
- 100 extra sweeping jobs
- 159 clearances of reported wet leaves
They have also carried out 71 other proactive projects such as:
- jet washing of pavements and bins
- removing weeds, leaves and other debris
The jet washing programme started in Southall and the team will work its way around the borough.
Flexibility to take action
Councillor leader Peter Mason said: “Keeping our streets clean is a priority for the council, and we know that residents want to see action when issues are reported.
“The tidy teams give us the flexibility to focus on problem areas and respond to local concerns in a way that goes beyond our regular cleansing programme.”
Councillor Dominic Moffitt, the council’s cabinet member for climate action, added: “More than 1,300 jobs done in 4 months, most within a week. That’s what happens when residents tell us where the problems are. I would encourage residents to continue reporting street cleansing issues so that we keep sending the tidy teams where they’re needed.”
