Hundreds of young people across the borough are quietly caring for family members at home, and it is not always easy. But support, fun and friendship are closer than they might think.
Young carers juggle school work, friendships and their own wellbeing alongside supporting someone at home – a parent, grandparent or sibling who is unwell.
While some young carers in the borough are getting support, many may not realise their role has a name and could be missing out on help.
That was the case for Bella, 14, who helps to care for her mum and grandparents.
‘I just thought it was normal’
Ealing Young Carers Project (EYCP) supports young people aged 8 to 18 who have caring responsibilities. Commissioned by Ealing Council and run by Brentford FC Community Sports Trust, it offers a safe, welcoming space where young carers can relax, connect with others and build confidence.
Bella said caring was something she had always done. “I didn’t realise I was a young carer – I just thought it was normal,” she said. “But it can be hard sometimes. The EYCP has helped me realise you can still have fun and be happy if you’re caring for someone.”
Her mum, Tamara, added: “Bella is amazing, and I don’t want her to miss out because she helps to care for me. This is an opportunity for her to go out, have fun and just be a young person.”
Bella recently took part in a 3-day drama workshop. “I loved it,” she said. “I want to be on stage in the West End one day – or maybe become a drama or music teacher.”
‘Isolation is huge’
EYCP manager Kathryn Sobczak, who was once a young carer herself, said: “Isolation is huge, which is why the project is so important.
“We offer one-to-one and group support, plus after-school clubs in Northolt and Ealing where young carers can relax, enjoy activities and spend time with others who understand.”
The project also runs holiday activities and supports older teens with CVs, confidence and employment.
