A housing development in Southall will soon include council homes for local families after a milestone on the project was hit.

A ‘topping out’ ceremony was held at the Green Quarter development recently, to mark a key stage in the building of a new block of 180 homes, which Ealing Council bought last year from the site’s developer, Berkeley. The homes would have been sold on the open market before the council stepped in.

This move was made in a bid to make new homes more readily available for families on the waiting list for council housing.

‘Topping out’ marks the point at which the construction of the building reaches its highest point, signalling that the project has moved into its final stages.

The homes, which range from 1 to 3 bedrooms, will be let at a mix of social rent and London Living Rent, ensuring that they remain affordable for residents on low and moderate incomes.

They remain on track to be completed and ready to let by early autumn 2026.

Council leader Peter Mason attended the event, along with cabinet members Councillor Louise Brett and Councillor Shital Manro.

Councillor Mason said: “These new homes will make a real difference to families who have been waiting for a safe, affordable place to live. This milestone demonstrates the real progress being made, and we look forward to welcoming residents into their new homes later this year.”

Councillor Shital Manro, cabinet member for good growth and new homes, added: “This is an important step toward providing secure, modern homes for local families. We are responding to the borough’s housing pressures by taking bold, practical action, and this scheme shows what can be achieved when we work proactively with developers to provide the homes that residents need.”
