Are you tired of traffic jams caused by roadworks? Ealing Council is taking action to tackle disruption, and you can share your views on the latest plans.
The council is consulting on proposals to introduce a lane rental scheme across some of the borough’s busiest roads.
View the online consultation on the council’s website and have your say by midnight on Monday 23 February 2026.
The plans aim to reduce disruption caused by roadworks and keep traffic moving.
Encouraging quicker, more efficient roadworks
A lane rental scheme allows councils to charge utility companies and other organisations a daily fee for carrying out works on the busiest roads. The fee will reflect how heavily a road is used.
The aim is to encourage companies to plan works outside peak traffic periods, finish them more quickly, or work together with other organisations so the same stretch of road is not dug up again soon after.
This approach supports the goals set out in Ealing Council’s transport strategy, as well as the Mayor of London’s plans to expand lane rental across the capital. By reducing unnecessary road disruption, the scheme would help make local travel safer and more reliable – contributing to a cleaner, greener and more accessible borough.
A map and full list of the roads included in the proposal are available to view as part of the consultation.
Once the consultation has finished, and the report has been published, the council will seek final approval on the scheme from the Department for Transport (DfT) before it can be implemented. If approved, the council expects to work closely with Transport for London and other London boroughs to create a consistent, London-wide approach.
‘Making day-to-day travel easier’
Councillor Paul Driscoll, the council’s cabinet member for climate action, said: “The proposal is about making day-to-day travel easier for everyone. While roadworks are a necessity, disruption should be kept to a minimum.
“By asking companies to plan better and finish faster, we can cut delays, support local businesses and help make our borough cleaner and greener.”
