Standing up for the borough’s renters

Ealing Council believes that everyone deserves a safe, secure, and affordable place to call home. Yet for too many families in our borough, the reality is one of insecurity, spiralling rents, and poor housing conditions.

The government is legislating on improving conditions in the private rented sector. This new law will abolish Section 21 ‘no-fault’ evictions, ending the fear of being kicked out of your home for no reason. It will apply the Decent Homes Standard to the private rented sector, ensuring that homes are fit to live in. And crucially, it will make it illegal for landlords and agents to discriminate against tenants on benefits or with children.

But legislation alone isn’t enough. We also need action at a local level. In Ealing we stand ready to enforce these rights. That’s why we’re expanding our enforcement capacity and preparing to use the new investigatory powers and civil penalties the government is giving us.

We are on the renters’ side and we will not allow rogue landlords to exploit our residents.

We’re also delivering on our Council Plan commitment to launch a Private Renters’ Association — led by renters, for renters. This new body will offer mutual support and advocacy, as we promised in our council plan.

We will be discussing our approach to renters’ rights next week at our council meeting. We will make clear this is a borough that stands up for fairness, dignity, and justice. With this new law and our local action, we’re making sure that renters are getting a fair deal.

Together, we’re building a better, fairer borough—where everyone has a decent place to live.
