Jefferson, Julie and their dog

‘It’s like having another family member’

Shared Lives Week runs from Monday 23 June to Friday 27 June 2025. Ahead of the week we’re shining a spotlight on a local family who joined the Ealing Shared Lives scheme and an upcoming information event on Monday 23 June.

Jefferson was nearly 16, had learning disabilities, and struggled to communicate due to hearing issues, when he became part of Julie Brown’s family. And, more than a decade later they continue to share their lives.

“Jefferson came to us just before he turned 16 through foster care,” Julie recalled. “At the time, he had very limited language due to hearing issues. We supported him through 2 cochlear implant surgeries at Great Ormond Street. When he turned 18, he wanted to stay with us, so we registered as Shared Lives carers.”

Ealing Shared Lives is a scheme run by Ealing Council. It is an adult placement service that allows carers to provide support and accommodation to adults with additional needs who live in the borough. This can be either on a long-term basis or for short breaks.  It’s not just about care – it’s about connection, community and giving people the chance to thrive.

“Shared Lives is different from fostering,” Julie explained. “Adults have different rights and make their own choices. It’s about sharing your life with them. Jefferson couldn’t live alone, but this way he has a family life and his rights are respected.”

Jefferson has now been a part of Julie’s family for 10 years.

‘He used to get lost, but he doesn’t anymore’

“We’re one big family,” she said.

Julie, 62, added that Jefferson, now 25, has grown into a confident and independent young man with a full and active life.

“He’s always on the go – cycling, planning his week, and making time for his favourite Costa Coffee,” she said. “He even keeps a photo of his bike insurance on his phone in case he needs repairs.”

“He plans his weeks, joins activities in Ealing, and travels independently. If he wants to go somewhere new, we plan it together – bus numbers, destinations, even taking photos of road signs. He used to get lost, but he doesn’t anymore.”

“No, not anymore,” Jefferson added with a smile.

‘You need a spare room and the willingness to put in the work’

Jefferson’s life is full of activity. He plays badminton, goes bowling and trampolining, walks the dog, visits water and theme parks, and explores local landmarks. He even has his own caravan.

Julie said:. “It gives him independence while still being close to us. He shops for himself and makes his own breakfast.”

Reflecting on the scheme, she added: “It’s like having another family member. If you think you’ve got something to offer an adult, it’s a chance to give them a different life – a sample of family life. It’s a great thing to do. Some of my friends say they’d like to try it – I always say, just ask. You need a spare room and the willingness to put in the work, but the rewards are huge.”

Shared Lives Week

To celebrate Shared Lives Week (23–27 June ), Ealing Council is hosting an information day in the North Atrium in Perceval House from 11am on Monday 23 June. It’s a chance to meet carers like Julie, hear stories like Jefferson’s, and find out how you can get involved.

Councillor Polly Knewstub, Ealing Council’s cabinet member for Healthy Equal Lives, said: “Stories like Jefferson and Julie’s show the true heart of our community. Shared Lives is not just about providing care – it’s about building relationships, fostering independence, and creating a sense of belonging. We’re proud to offer this incredible scheme in Ealing, and I encourage anyone who feels they could offer a supportive home to find out more during Shared Lives Week.”
