The new cycle lane in Kensington road.

A boost for cycling

Lots more people are using bicycles to get about in the borough since Ealing Council introduced a new cycle path in Northolt, as part of a wider plan to get more residents walking, scooting and cycling.

In the last 6 months, since the new cycle path was laid in Kensington Road as part of the council’s Visions for Northolt (VfN) project, council traffic sensors have recorded a 30% increase in the number of cyclists across Mandeville Road and Ealing Road, compared to last year.

As part of the improvements, work has also been done to resurface pavements, and introduce new lighting and bike parking.

The project aims to address residents’ concerns over traffic, road safety and pollution in the area. It includes a £1.3 million investment into making walking, wheeling, cycling and public transport more convenient and safer options for residents.

‘Visions for Northolt is paying off’

Further works, including a new cycle route and other improvements such as wider pavements, new trees and crossings along Mandeville Road are now complete, and should improve transport options for people in the area and lead to more people choosing to walk, wheel or cycle.

Ealing Council leader Peter Mason said: “The increase in cyclists shows our investment into Visions for Northolt is already paying off, and that we’ve provided improvements that local people want to see. I’m confident that cycling, along with other forms of active travel, will only increase now that the works on Mandeville Road are complete.”

Councillor Paul Driscoll, the council’s cabinet member for climate action, added: “We know that safety is the biggest concern for residents when considering cycling, so seeing more segregated cycle paths going in across the borough is an important step towards removing this barrier. Making it more convenient and safer for people to cycle will help reduce congestion and pollution in the area, as well as helping our residents lead happier, healthier lives.”

Come along

To celebrate the improvements on Mandeville Road, residents are invited to enjoy cycle tours, Yoga, arts and crafts and other fun activities on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 May, from midday to 3pm in Islip Manor Park. You can find out more on the Visions for Northolt website.

The work taking place on Mandeville Road has been directly influenced by residents and business in the area in line with the council’s Travel in Ealing Charter. Around 700 people gave their views about improvements to Northolt’s street scene as part of engagement and consultation that took place in spring 2023.
