Welcome to the summer 2019 edition of Around Ealing magazine.
Having just been to the Hanwell Hootie (see page seven), I’m now looking forward to the live music and comedy coming our way with the Ealing Summer Festivals. You can read a three-page preview from page 15 – and you can also enter a competition with the chance of winning tickets to the comedy festival.
It seems hard to believe it is almost a year since we watched England in the football World Cup but somehow it is summertime again. So, what else is in the summer 2019 edition?
Thousands of you marched and petitioned to save our local A&Es and I am sure every one of you will be pleased with the NHS’s recent decision to scrap the planned A&E closures (p10-11).
Pupils at Fielding Primary in West Ealing are leading the way when it comes to bright ideas about helping the school to recycle more – and their ideas are being shared with other schools, too (p19).
Meanwhile, several regeneration projects in the heart of Ealing town centre promise to continue a transformation that started with the almost-completed Dickens Yard complex of homes, shops, restaurants and a public square.
Inspired by the Do Something Good campaign, we took a look at how a group of neighbours in Hanwell have joined forces to keep their green spaces as clean as possible by organising regular litter picking and clear-ups.
We also take a look at various ways people are taking on caring roles within the community. Caleb Campbell only started fostering when he was in his late 60s – but 12 years later he is enjoying it as much as ever (p21).
Being a carer can feel like a full-time job, and very often it is. However, two carers told us how the council’s flexible way of arranging support has helped them, including providing them with time away from caring duties (p27).
